One Question: Could Bill Self Catch Coach K’s Record?
Look, you have to be feeling good after yesterday’s win. I know I am. So let’s keep the immaculate vibes rolling and look at where Bill Self could end up among the all-time greats.
Coach K retired as college basketball’s all-time winningest coach with 1,202 wins in 47 seasons. The mark is in reach for Bill Self if he wants it.
Self (29.5 seasons) will likely finish this year in 14th place on the list, one spot above John Calipari (30.5 seasons). Both coaches are currently tied with 786 wins.
Here’s the math that gets Self into the top of the all-time win list…1
Self averages 29.5 wins per season at Kansas. At this rate:
In five years, Self will have 933 wins. He’d stand fourth all-time, assuming Huggins coaches another year or two. It’s not unreasonable to think this will happen.
In 10 years, Self will have 1,081 wins. It’s possible he’d sit second all-time.
In 15 years, Self will have 1,228 wins. He’s REASONABLY 15 years away from being the all-time winningest coach in college basketball. He’d be 75 years old when this happens, the same age Coach K retired.
The important caveat here is that Self has long-referenced not coaching into his later years. But he’s also in the .01% of most competitive people on the planet — and history is within reach.
One Stat: Dajuan Harris Controlled the Game
Dajuan Harris assisted on nearly 40% of KU’s field goals while he was on the floor. He was so steady in a physical and chaotic battle.
One Tweet: Should Jalen Stop Scoring? 🤣
It’s reasonably possible this math is screwy. The equation is “1,202 = 786 + 29.5x.”
COACH K IS THE BEST EVER, HANDS DOWN!
It's been neat seeing Bill get the flowers he has ALWAYS deserved as an all-time great. Live in Oklahoma and it seems people around here are finally coming around on how ridiculous he is. He's always been better than the Izzos & Caliparis of the world... It's about time we recognize it!
