There was a revealing moment on Jayhawk Gameday Live ahead of KU's game against Indiana on Saturday. While answering a question about playing a blue blood, Bill Self talked about retiring.
"I'm going to do this a few more years, but it won't be a ton," Self said. "There's a lot of places I haven't been to yet, and I'd love to have the opportunity to go home-and-home with some of these folks like Indiana."
I've heard whispers of Self retiring being the One True Thing that keeps AD Travis Goff up at night. This makes total sense. Hiring a Self's successor will ultimately be the most important thing he does at Kansas.
Self has said he won't leave KU during the NCAA infractions saga. Instead, he wants to ensure the Jayhawks are set up for long-term success. Plus, a third title puts him in legit RARE territory. The evidence suggests legacy matters to Self.
Before anyone freaks out (on me or about Self), it's important to say his answer made complete sense. Self is 59 years old, a grandpa, and earned generational wealth. His job is stressful. It has to take a toll on him. So if you care about Self — and you have any humanity — you should want the man to ride off into the sunset.
That said: DON'T YOU DARE LEAVE US.
So, a ton is like what, 2000? So, when he says "not a ton" - I guess he's going to coach 1,999 more (years, games, seasons) - take your pick.
I hope he hands on until 65.
