First and foremost, Happy March. I’m back after a few days off with a Bill Self Hearing that I found interesting. I don’t view this as groundbreaking by any means, but it’s still a major item on KU’s offseason checklist.
I’ve got a stacked few weeks ahead for us with postseason KU hoops content and an additional Memorial Stadium HEARING in the works.

The Hearing
KU Athletics will likely get another reminder that winning ain't cheap this summer. I'm Hearing KU expects Bill Self to push for a raise for both himself and his staff this offseason.
Self notably didn't receive a salary bump after the 2022 National Championship. Since then, he's only followed up with yet another remarkable season for the Jayhawks. So yeah, Self's expectation for a pay bump is (relatively) reasonable based on KU's performance.
Beyond winning a zillion games, Self is always protecting and sustaining the basketball program. Optics are a major part of that. Many consider Self to be the best coach in college hoops right now — with a sizeable gap between him and anyone else.
KU's Hall of Fame coach earns $5.4M per year, making him the fourth highest-paid coach in college basketball behind John Calipari, Tom Izzo and Mick Cronin. Calipari's annual deal nets him $8.1M per season.
My one caveat to this Hearing is that Self and KU Hoops has landed major renovations for Allen Fieldhouse. Its players continue bringing in meaningful NIL deals as well. Even if Self doesn't push for a raise himself, there is an expectation that he'll secure raises for his staff.
This financial push from KU basketball follows a year in which football investments grabbed center stage. The football coaching staff landed major pay raises while locking in Memorial Stadium renovations (more Hearings soon).
Self has long been a staunch ally to the football program and does plenty of heavy lifting for KU Athletics. However, it's within reason for him to maximize basketball resources at all times.
And it appears he'll be doing just that with a big offseason ahead.
Bill Self should be at least the 2nd if not the highest paid coach in college basketball period. Consistent and sustained winning at a high level validates that!!
