The Great Kansas City Myth 🤯
Betting markets and my take
The Kansas City Stat that Shocked Me 🤯
I think it’s fair to say KU’s losses in Kansas City have scarred its fans. I’ve always repeated the same kind of beliefs about The Jayhawks playing in KC…
“There’s too much pressure.”
“The crowd is stale.”
“The team plays tight there.”
“There are too many distractions.”
I looked into it, and those beliefs are wrong. At the very least, they’re outdated.
In the Big 12 Tournament, Kansas has not only won but COVERED the spread in 11 of its last 12 games. This dates back to 2018 and shows how shockingly dominant the Jayhawks have been. Going 11-1 vs. the spread against high-quality opponents is just impossible to comprehend. Take a look for yourself.
If you add in KU’s non-Big 12 Tourney games in Kansas City, the record jumps to 13-1 vs. the spread since 2018. In the same period, Kansas is 42-45-2 against the spread in Big 12 play… at Allen Fieldhouse.
Previous trends like this don’t mean much for today’s game.. or future games in Kansas City. I’ll do further analyze NCAA Tournament games in KC if it becomes relevant (hypothetically speaking).
Still, the record is just another one showing the Jayhawks’ dominance during the last few years. As Bob Davis would say, The Hawks are cooking.
Betting Market Breakdown
TODAY: Kansas vs. Texas in the Big 12 Tournament Championship
Opening spread: Kansas favored by 2 points
Current spread: Kansas favored by 2.5 points (as of 1:22PM CT)
DraftKings is reporting 78% of bettors and 84% of money wagered is on Kansas to cover the spread. (via VSiN)
Action Network is reporting 76% of bettors and 57% of money wagered is on Kansas to cover the spread. It also indicates Pro Money on the Jayhawks.
My Take:
There appears to be some Pro Money on the Jayhawks today, as the line ticked up in KU’s favor after bouncing around a bit.
Another notable trend is KU and Texas have combined to hit the over in 1 of their last 10 games. Yet, Action Network shows pros betting against the trend and taking the over on ~142 total points.
I will be taking Kansas with the points, for no other reason than I’m not betting against Kansas today. It’s the Big 12 Championship. C’mon.
