I think this is an issue far above the athletic department. Students were pretty angry when the UDK reported the amount of $ that was dumped into a font essentially owned by another University, but with a swoosh under the K.
It's a branding thing, and if you're associated with the University, you are under the brand umbrella.
I love Circus, but Trajan has been the font far longer in Self's tenure.
