Those who follow me on Twitter know I've spent plenty of time over the last year digging into the NCAA's handling of the FBI-Adidas cases.1 These conversations often left me in awe of the bureaucratic slowness resulting in such delayed resolutions of these cases.
The latest example: Kansas and the IARP STILL don’t have a date for a hearing, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. A hearing is the final major step before the IARP can decide KU's fate in this whole saga. Simply, it’s the NCAA's version of court.
Sources have expressed both Kansas and the IARP want this resolved as quickly as possible. They are actively working on setting a date with a goal of holding the hearing before this summer.2 So yeah, this is still gonna take a long time, even though everyone wants it done.
We will explore blame for the embarrassingly long case another day.3 All we can do right now is look at the other IARP timelines to get an idea of how soon this will resolve. Unfortunately, it doesn’t get any better.
N.C. State: Hearing on August 9-10. The final decision was announced on December 20, 2021.
Memphis: Hearing on May 20-21, 2022. The final decision was announced on September 27, 2022.
The time and money wasted on these cases grow more outlandish when you look a the findings. The last two significant decisions from the IARP essentially absolved Rick Pitino and Sean Miller of wrongdoing.
I know you're asking what it means for KU. And sure, it seems like a good sign for Bill Self, but that doesn't mean he's in the clear just yet.
Like all of us, he's gonna have to wait a while to find out.
There is plenty more to come. Forward this post to a friend, or something, because I’ve been reporting on it for free for a YEAR! Who does that?!
If they wait until after the season, we’re looking at a hearing date in April or May.
It’s going to take me a while to do it justice… and I have a job! Have I mentioned this thing is free?!
